Emerging Leaders Awarded with Scholarships!

On November 28th 2018, we learned that three of our four applicants who applied for the New Futures Program* had been accepted and would receive generous scholarships of $7,800 each!

We were thrilled to get this news, as were the young recipients. Impressed by the amount of  successful Jubilee Jobs applicants, Silvana Rueda, the Scholars Program Manager at New Futures, asked us what the “secret sauce” had been in this recent application process.

The answer was simple: Our volunteers.

On a busy Tuesday night last summer, a handful of volunteers met our applicants at 2712 Ontario Road. The volunteers lent their expertise in resume creation, submitting of applications, interviewing and essay writing. They not only helped produce the winning applications but also coached the candidates in the art of the perfect interview.

On January 31, 2019 the New Futures Scholarship Awards Dinner was held at the Waldman Marriott in Woodley Park and our three awardees – Darian Lassiter, Michael Coleman and Tsega Lemu, happily accepted their scholarships to exuberant applause.

That secret sauce that Silvana asked about contains a mixture of ingredients that we’ll continue to use – ample kindness, determination, strong faith, positive energy – and we look   forward to more successes for all our applicants’ new futures.

*The New Futures Program “propels under-served young people through certifications and community college degrees and into rewarding careers.”
