Jubilee Jobs stands for economic inclusion and closing the opportunity gap in DC. We bring our clients out of the isolation of unemployment into marketplace jobs offering stabilizing income, as well as ongoing career development opportunities.

Community Impact

Black and Brown people face the greatest barriers to opportunity in our country; and Black DC residents have the highest unemployment rate in the nation. According to the Economic Policy Institute, they are about five times more likely to be unemployed than their White counterparts. 91% of Jubilee Jobs’ clients are Black, and 94% lack post-secondary education.

Many of our clients have faced difficult life circumstances that have taken them out of the workforce. Many do not have access to a computer or the internet, and they struggle with hiring platforms on their phone screens. We provide a supportive community to help them navigate these barriers and start again.

Jubilee Jobs clients earn between $17.50 – $25.10/hour. Post-pandemic inflation rates and soaring costs of living have made life for these low- wage earners harder than ever. Furthermore, jobs in low-wage sectors of the economy— essential jobs — are often part-time and/or have unpredictable schedules. We envision an opportunity for our clients to move beyond entry level work into career pathways offering predictability and economic mobility.

We stand in solidarity with the Aspen Institute’s Good Jobs Champions who hold up a goal of improving the quality of low wage jobs. Specifically, a good job provides family-sustaining pay, healthcare benefits, a predictable schedule, and a realistic pathway toward advancement to build a career and savings. And finally, good jobs offer dignity and respect for the contributions of all workers.

To this end, we offer industry-recognized certificate trainings that build off the education and skill levels that our clients bring, as well as aligning to local high-demand industries, such as hospitality and food service.

In designing our certificate trainings, we recognize that the precarity of our clients’ lives means that they cannot take weeks or months off work to participate in typical workforce development programs. To make these opportunities more accessible, we offer a condensed format for first-tier certifications, along with stipends and transportation cards. Over time, they can take the next tiers of certification training for further career development.
